I like a boy at school and have for some time. We have classes together but we're not friends, more like acquaintances. Today I learned that one of his best friends, who also happens to be one of my friends, also likes him. I overheard him say to his friends that "he knows that she likes him". If he knows does he not like her therefore I still can hope? Or should I just ignore it all and support my friend? I have absolutely no idea what to do.

On a side note, even if I can't be romantically involved with this guy, I still want to be his friend. The problem is that since I like him, I don't know what to talk about or even when I should talk to him. How do I go about gaining his friendship?
